A Guide to Visting Turkey
Exploring Istanbul: A Cultural and Culinary Journey Through Turkey’s Most Vibrant City
Istanbul has always been at the crossroads of cultures, connecting the East and West in a beautiful blend of history, architecture, and flavors. During my recent trip, I had the privilege of exploring this vibrant city, and I can confidently say that Istanbul is a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates rich history, diverse culture, incredible food, and shopping that feels like a treasure hunt.
Here’s a closer look at what makes Istanbul so special, from its awe-inspiring mosques to its buzzing bazaars, mouthwatering cuisine, and so much more.
A Rich History: Where East Meets West
Istanbul is unlike any other city in the world—its location on the Bosphorus Strait has made it a historical bridge between Europe and Asia for centuries. This unique setting has helped shape its culture and history, making it one of the most fascinating cities I've ever visited.
The city was once the heart of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, and its rich history is still visible everywhere you look. From the iconic Hagia Sophia, which has served as a church, mosque, and museum, to the towering Blue Mosque with its stunning domes and minarets, Istanbul is a city where ancient history meets modern vibrancy. The Topkapi Palace, once the home of Ottoman sultans, offers an incredible glimpse into the luxury and intrigue of the empire, and a stroll through the Basilica Cistern gives you the feeling of stepping into another world with its eerie, beautifully lit columns.
Don’t miss:
Hagia Sophia: An architectural masterpiece that reflects the city’s layered history, now functioning as a mosque.
Blue Mosque: Another stunning mosque that sits right across from the Hagia Sophia, famous for its intricate blue tiles and impressive architecture.
Topkapi Palace: The former residence of Ottoman sultans, now a museum with stunning courtyards, gardens, and treasures.
Basilica Cistern: A unique underground space with towering columns and an eerie, atmospheric vibe.
Culinary Delights: A Feast for the Senses
The food in Istanbul is nothing short of extraordinary. Turkish cuisine is famous for its variety, rich flavors, and emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients. I could have spent days eating my way through the city, sampling everything from simit (sesame bread) to kebabs, baklava, and Turkish delight. Everywhere you go, there’s a new culinary delight waiting to be discovered.
Start your mornings with a traditional Turkish breakfast spread: fresh bread, olives, honey, cheese, and eggs, all served with Turkish tea. For lunch, you can’t go wrong with a classic kebap, whether it’s adana kebap (spicy minced lamb) or Iskender kebap (a delicious dish made with thinly sliced lamb, yogurt, and tomato sauce). For dinner, mezes (small appetizer plates) are a great way to sample a variety of dishes, and don’t forget to indulge in baklava for dessert—flaky, buttery pastry layers filled with pistachios or walnuts and drenched in syrup. And of course, wash it all down with a glass of raki, Turkey’s famous anise-flavored spirit.
Don’t miss:
Karaköy Güllüoğlu: One of the best places to sample baklava in Istanbul, with its rich, sweet flavors and melt-in-your-mouth texture.
Köfteci Ramiz: For delicious, affordable meatballs (köfte) served in various ways.
Mikla: If you’re looking for an upscale dining experience with a view, Mikla is a rooftop restaurant offering creative, contemporary Turkish dishes.
Shopping in Istanbul: The Heartbeat of the City
Istanbul is a shopping paradise. The city’s bazaars and markets are a sensory overload in the best possible way—vibrant, colorful, and full of treasures waiting to be found. The Grand Bazaar is a must-visit for anyone looking to take home a piece of Istanbul’s culture. With over 4,000 shops, it’s one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. Here you’ll find everything from handcrafted jewelry, spices, and carpets to leather goods and turkish ceramics. Haggle a little, and you may walk away with a beautiful handmade souvenir.
Not far from the Grand Bazaar is the Spice Bazaar, a sensory delight where you can stock up on spices, teas, dried fruits, and sweets. It’s the perfect place to pick up some Turkish delight or sumac to take home as a reminder of your time in the city.
For more modern shopping, head to Istiklal Avenue, a bustling street lined with shops, boutiques, and cafes. It’s the place to go for high-end fashion, quirky finds, and a lively atmosphere. If you’re looking for luxury shopping, Nişantaşı is home to international designer stores and chic local boutiques.
Don’t miss:

Istiklal Avenue: A lively street filled with both modern shopping and old-world charm.
Best Things to Do in Istanbul
There’s no shortage of things to see and do in Istanbul. From historical landmarks to cultural experiences, here’s a list of the best things I recommend:
Take a Bosphorus Cruise: A boat ride along the Bosphorus Strait is a fantastic way to see Istanbul from a different perspective. The views of the city’s skyline, palaces, and fortresses are breathtaking.
Visit the Galata Tower: For a panoramic view of the city, head to the top of the Galata Tower. It’s one of the best spots to see Istanbul’s beautiful skyline.
**Explore the neighborhoods of Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu: Sultanahmet is the historical heart of the city, while Beyoğlu offers more modern vibes with shopping, art galleries, and cafes.
Try a Hammam Experience: Indulge in a traditional Turkish bath at one of Istanbul’s historic hammams, such as the Çemberlitaş Hammam. It’s a truly relaxing and unique experience.
**Stroll Through the Basilica Cistern: This ancient underground water system is both eerie and beautiful, with its towering columns and subtle lighting.
